Dr. Joseph G. Schmidt, Jr. DDS
Dr. Schmidt graduated 12th in his class at The University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio Dental Branch in 1982. In addition to the required dental school curriculum, he also completed elective courses in Orthodontics and Oral Surgery while he was in attendance. During the summers he held research positions within the dental school concentrating on dental bonding materials and in lightweight prostheses for the facial cancer patients. He also was one of a select group of student practitioners responsible for screening, diagnosing and treatment planning new patients for entry into the dental school's clinic. In 1982 he was nominated and elected to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Fraternity-the National Dental Honor Society.
Since graduation, Dr. Schmidt has continued to be one of the community leaders in dental continuing education. He attends more than 2 ½ weeks of high quality knowledge and technique advancing courses each year. He has received some of his most in-depth post-graduate education in New York, San Francisco, Miami, and Dallas. Dr. Schmidt was one of the founding members of the Central Texas Chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry. This organization's goal is to bring the best dental minds in the world to Austin for the educational benefit of local dentists. He was the youngest of the founding board members and today still holds a position on this board. As a member the Academy of General Dentistry, he was awarded the distinguished status of Fellow in 1993 for successfully completing testing based on over 500 hours of post-graduate continuing education.
The educational organization for which he holds the highest respect is the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Each year Dr. Schmidt attends their weeklong world conference where he is kept abreast of the best techniques and the very latest advances in cosmetic dentistry. Each day more than 25 hours of lectures are presented simultaneously by the very best clinicians in the world. The evenings are spent conversing one-on-one with these lecturers and other dentists striving to deliver the very best to our patients.
High quality continuing dental education does make a difference.
After graduation in 1982, and a final-exam-forgetting escape to Cozumel, Dr. Schmidt was proud to join Dr. Wm. K. Thomson in Austin as his associate. Dr. Schmidt was able to enter an established high quality practice where his values of providing only the best for the patient was able to be perfected.
Dr. Schmidt opened his own office in southwest Austin February 1985 and has been creating smiles ever since.
Dr. Schmidt is proud of its strong commitment to expert smile analysis and subsequently creating a very natural, full, bright smile for his male and female patients. For many patients, these self-esteem enhancements are life changing. He utilizes high-tech computer imagery to pre-plan each patient's individual smile.
Dr. Schmidt was born in Hondo, Texas in 1956. He is the oldest of three. He grew up in Texas City where his parents still reside. He attended Catholic grade school and high school, graduating from O'Connell High School in Galveston in 1974 with the honor of being the highest ranking male of his graduating class. He completed his undergraduate work at The University of Texas-Austin in December 1977 with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry-Magna Cum Laude. He married his high school sweetheart in June 1978 and moved to San Antonio in August. After dental school, Austin was the place to be, so they moved to heaven-on-earth, and now have five incredible children, 1 dog, 3 cats, and 4 rabbits.
Dr. Schmidt spends most of his spare time playing with and entertaining his five children. When he finds free time, he loves flying Cessna aircraft, playing tennis, and fishing for the big ones, especially saltwater. Gourmet cooking, boating, scuba diving, gardening, weather, astronomy, and hiking, round out his list of hobbies.
